“unmotherly”

Updated: Apr 16, 2023

i thought a mother’s love came

naturally

like the rising and setting of the sun

like the building of a wren’s nest

like the brook lapping across stones

i thought a mother’s love was

overwhelming

like the rush of a hurricane

like the feeling on the first day of school

like the moment you say goodbye forever

i thought a mother’s love was

unending

like the fluttering of the hummingbird’s wings

like the reach of the redwoods in the forest

like the orbiting of the moon ‘round the earth

why is your love unmotherly?
